What car insurance covers
There are several things you need to consider in order to ensure you get the best car insurance deal available. Our guide to the basics
will assist you.
What's the best policy for you?
When you choose a policy you must decide what level of cover you require, if you need any additional benefits added onto the standard policy
and what is your price range.
1. Third Party Cover
This is generally the cheapest car insurance option and will cover you if you injure someone or damage their car or property due to an accident.
2. Third party, fire and theft
Added to the third party cover this motor insurance policy also covers you for repair or replacement in the event your car is stolen or damaged/destroyed by fire.
3. Comprehensive cover
With comprehensive auto insurance you get all the cover above and you also can claim for damage to your car.
4. Additional cover
This is an opportunity for you to decide what is important to you in terms of cover and what you are prepared to pay for that extra cover.
You may not have to pay extra for some of these; most motor insurance providers in Ireland include some or all of these within a comprehensive policy
Protection of your No Claims Bonus – full or partial
Personal accident insurance for you and your named drivers
Personal belongings if stolen from the car
Roadside assistance or breakdown assistance from home
Cover if driving your car in Europe
Courtesy car whilst yours is being repaired due to an accident
Legal costs to cover cost if you are brought to court due to an accident
Check your motor insurance policy including the small print for these items:
What cover includes & excludes – make sure you have all the cover you expect
Higher than normal excess for comprehensive claims – you can opt for this to get lower premiums
Pay by instalment costs – the benefit of ability to budget can outweigh interest costs
To get the best deal for car insurance
Check what discounts are available for you. There can be discounts for:
Adding named drivers
Using same insurer for all policies
Having driving experience as a named driver along with your own No Claims Bonus
You might also qualify for a low mileage discount on your motor insurance if you drive infrequently or only do short journeys
Compare quotes – price is important but so is the level of cover.
