If you are searching for young driver’s car insurance, there are a few ways young drivers can lower the cost of their premiums – read on to learn more.

Getting more driving experience, asking an older relative to be added to their policy, and driving the right kind of car can all help young drivers pay less on their insurance.

If you’re a young driver, reducing the cost of your car insurance may be a priority. Luckily, there are a few ways to do it.

In this article, we’ll be covering these questions:

You may be surprised to learn what tricks you can leverage to lower your car insurance. Read on to find out all about them.

How can I get more driving experience?

Building up your driving experience will help lower the cost of your car insurance. At the very least, try and get one year’s driving experience under your belt.

But how do you get driving experience in the first place? The best way is to get added to another person’s policy.

Ask your parents, grandparents, guardian or trusted older friend to see how much it would be to add you on their own car insurance policy as a learner driver. It is less expensive to add on a learner driver than getting your own policy, but it still adds to your driving experience.

This is because it is illegal for a learner driver to drive unaccompanied. Insurance companies know that young drivers are less likely to mess around, drive fast, brake hard and take risks when there’s an older adult in the car.

Some insurance companies will give you an introductory discount or no claims bonus for previous driving experience when you buy your own policy.

Will a tracker reduce my car insurance?

In most cases, yes. A black box, tracker, or telematics box is a small device which monitors your driving habits. When you take out a black box car insurance policy, your insurer will arrange for a third party to install the black box on your car. It’s pretty small – around the size of a mobile phone – and they’ll place it in a discreet location, so no one will be able to see the device.

It can monitor your speed, how sharply you turn, how suddenly you brake, and how far you drive. Most insurers, such as AIG, offer cheaper car insurance because you have to choose the number of kilometres you expect to travel in a year.

Trackers are a great idea because at the same time you’re building a no-claims bonus, you’re building a reputation as a sensible driver that will stand you in good stead next time you buy or renew your car insurance. Black boxes give insurers a more accurate idea of how safe a driver you are, rather than relying on general statistics that don’t always portray young or inexperienced drivers in a good light.

Your insurance provider should give you access to your own driving data, through an app or website. They might even give you helpful driving advice that helps you become a better and safer driver (and earn more kilometres).

Will the type of car I drive affect my car insurance?

Yes. Before you choose your vehicle, check the price of insuring it – as you may lose any savings you make on the vehicle by needing to insure it.

Instead of just looking up the make and model, write down all the registration numbers of the cars you like and enter those on the insurance website for a quote. Some versions of the same vehicle will be more powerful, more valuable, or have limited edition features. For example, saying you have a Volkswagen Golf is not specific enough. There are currently eight generations of this car, as well as electric versions. Within those generations, there are different options such as diesel or petrol, custom features, and more.

Small cars with a small engine size will be cheaper to insure. This is because they are easier to control on the road, and it’s generally cheaper to repair or replace parts. If you’re a young driver wondering what your first car should be, consider a small, reasonably cheap and safe little runner.
